Distance.

JABBABOY plays with the distance between hot brass fuckhorn and your fleshy human ear on this wonderful, brain-prodding spool.

A solo saxophone is played in the hot/high registers that used to make them jazz cats weep and mutter “sheets-of-sound man, sheets-of-sound.”

It’s constantly squealing and frothing, roiling and bubbling, but always at a distance. Themes dance like a tin Shiva, bucking under the pressure of one thousand smoggy atmospheres. Eyes pop with lung-busting power yeah!

But this is not just another free blow-out. The extra shadowing of the recording process and gentle tape manipulation turns these wild moans into dank phantoms; the brass bends (as brass always will) into a flattened disc, a golden sun that warms your neck and throat.

Ah! There’s the distance.

Across two untitled solo saxophone incantations, Jabbaboy conjures inter-species time travel transformation scenarios from the end of a golden bell. First of all, he’s a sepia donkey in a dusty 1930s military parade, braying in melancholy excitement and agony. As the wine begins to kick in he slides into fainting quarantine down an infinite corridor of memories, finally emerging as a befuddled hawk somewhere in the Carpathians. The second excursion is more see-saw than hee-haw, as he inhabits a toothless grandfather in ribcage rocking chair, humming mutant porch tunes on imaginary old-time 78s. Rattling keys are skeleton teeth in a jar, attracting bees with ghost honey. He is still alive somewhere in time.
